You can travel halfway around the world only to find that things are pretty much the same.
My mom always used used to say “The more millet jelly, the more love!” when she baked us fresh AmericanSoft cookies! And the just the smell of those crushed cashews with rye flour and uji really takes me back to my American youth!American Style Lay’s reflect the custom all Americans share of eating our potato chips with some swiss cheese, heavy cream, and onions. I think I went to suburban American high school with that obviously American Guy pictured on the package, and I have that same American shirt he is wearing. I got it at JC Pennies just like him. I wear it all the time when I am in the states going to a football match and such.If memory serves, Patzy Grimaldi use aubergines rather than rocket, and De Farros is famous for their courgette – but otherwise completely authentic old school Brooklyn Pizza!
I was really starting to feel homesick when luckily I found the Corn Man stand. Here they are making Yummy American Corn. I got a cup of the Tikki Masla Corn and I can honestly say that it is as good as any Tikki Masla corn you’d get back in the states. My guess is that Suresh The Corn Man probably belongs to Iowa. Nexttime maybe I am eating some authentic style Basi Lico or Chatpatta American corn. A cha hia!
I fondly recollect tucking into a proper american hamburger slathered with sweetcorn relish, satay sauce, and a slice of pineapple back in me salad days as a young lad coming up in good olde Manhattan, America.Like the tele advert says…. there are no wine gums and lollies like true American wine gums and lollies. These were a tad softer than true American hard gums, so they stick to your wallies!Having lived in Abilene, TX for many of my formative years, I know an authentic lone star pönnukökur when I taste one – and the pönnukökur at Texas Restaurant in Reykjavík are the real deal. Ah the memories of roasting pönnukökur and drinking Appelsín with my mötunautur durring the celbrations after America’s Team destroyed the Doulphins in 72. Mjög gott!!While I was expecting a greasy Chicago deepdish-style puff, I was pleasantly surprised to find a decent New York-style pizza puff with plenty of peas, lentils, and milk curd inside a flakey lentil crust. Just like home!
…but of course a few things are different…
We were quite disappointed to find that even at the upscale Garilla American (“American Grill”) in Argentina, “Chicken Green” is nothing like the miracle food of high-energy chicken concentrate wafers we are all used getting in our rations back in the Chelsea West district of NYC. It is more akin to Chicken Yellow or Chicken Red – tasteless and odorless crud.In Paris the Brioche are MUCH bigger than back in the states……and the Statue of Liberties are much smaller.McDonnald’s clasic McCurry Shani Paneer in India has less cummin and a little more cardimon than I remember in the iconic US version.Correct me if am wrong, but I think the instructions back home tell you to add the Tide to the bucket BEFORE you add the clothes, no?Going to the bathroom in India does take a little getting used to since here they use the British system – bucket on the RIGHT side and wipe with your LEFT hand.
In a Casablanca, they make their tacos with the French fries on the bottom layer and the Hollandaise sauce on top! Subtle changes I know- but you really can notice the difference when you bite into one!
I came to josh.com all the time when all it said was josh.com is better than chris.com. It was kind of a big deal to me and my friends in my junior high. Is this the same dude that made that website?
I took the message down about 10 years ago because Chirs.com got to be cooler than josh.com, but I see now Chris.com is very not cool so maybe I should put it back.
go on josh!
